Who:
If it did not at some time in its life walk, crawl, squirm, hop, fly or swim do not eat it. Examples: Steaks come from cows; chickens are pseudoflyers, close enough; fish swim, therefor they are all right to eat. What is pastrami, pickle loaf, bologna, hot dogs, sausage? Are hot dogs "Dogs", maybe a wiener dog? A congealed mass of fat, animal by products, flavorings, and preservatives is a better answer. Sounds appetizing. Do not even look at that part of the grocery store. To all parents; how many times have you fed your kids hot dogs while you ate filet mignon?

What:
If it did not grow on a bush or tree or in the ground do not eat it. Examples: Berries, apples, oranges, banana, potatoes, carrots, etc., are good to eat. Where did Twinkies, Ho-Hos, potato chips, pretzels come from?

Where:
Not while you are working out and always where you can get something nutritious.

When:
Frequently. Do not make the mistake of skipping meals or waiting to long between meals. Smaller meals eaten more frequently are much better. Eat carbohydrates and most of your calories earlier in the day. Most people that do not like eating in the morning eat to much late at night. Eating late at night stimulates fat production. Your body knows how many calories it needs, caloric set point, or how many calories it is use to getting and when you have reached that amount you will not be as hungry. Learn to listen to your body.

How:
Try not to eat fast, slow down. This will allow your satiety reflex to tell you that you have had enough. Try eating a piece of gum instead of desert.

"There is nothing more
important in your whole
life than eating right"

Four Basic Food Groups are now arranged in a pyramid

  1. Fat occupies the least amount of space on the pyramid, so you need to eat less fats than anything. A study done on rats fed isocaloric diets (same number of calories) one diet containing more calories from fat than the other diet, the rats fed more fat were fatter. The type of fat, saturated or unsaturated, plays a role in were the fat is deposited. Saturated fats have a tendency to be store around the abdominal area and in the arteries. Calories play a major role in your diet, but where the calories come from are important. Fats contain more calories than proteins and carbohydrates. Food examples that contain a lot of fat: Oils, margarine, butter, eggs, whole milk, most cheeses, peanuts, and red meat. I will not mention lunch meat type products because you should not be eating them (see above).

  2. Proteins are the stable of life and a most overlooked food among individuals on a diet. Lean meats are an essential for great nutrition. Red meats, beef/cow, contain a lot of fat therefore reduce the portion size that you eat. Consume more chicken and fish. Eat white meat chicken and remove the skin before or after cooking. Marinade or bast with something to help retain moisture during cooking if you remove the skin before cooking.

  3. Carbohydrates There are several types of carbohydrates, complex and simple are two types. Complex carbohydrates are great. They include whole wheat products, pasta, vegetables, and fruits. Try to consume as many servings of vegetables as you can. Try to eat a lot of fruit, but be aware that fruits contain a lot of simple sugars. Eat fruit not fruit juice, several oranges are used to make one glass of orange juice this mean more calories and more simple sugar. The orange juice is also devoid of complex carbohydrates found in mother nature's package. These complex carbohydrates are called fiber. The importance of fiber in your diet can not be underestimated. The inclusion of whole grain cereals for breakfast will help you meet your needs. Not Wheaties, but Quaker oats, prepared quickly in the microwave and sweeten with a few raisins; Nabisco shredded wheat, Hodgson cracked wheat, etc.

  4. Milk, a good source of protein and calcium. Choose skim milk or at least I% milkfat. Most cheeses contain a lot of fat, like red meat, reduce portion size and the frequency of consumption.

Alcohol, contrary to popular belief, is not one of the major food groups. Your body treats alcohol much like it treats fat it deposits it right on your butt.

Vitamins and minerals supplements The scientific literature overwhelming supports the beneficial effects of many vitamins and minerals, but scientists are still reluctant to recommend the supplementation of these vital nutrients. It might be because they remember what happen to two time Nobel Laureate Dr. Linus Pauling when he proclaimed the accolades of vitamin C. If a little is good more is better is not the case with vitamins and minerals some can be toxic at high doses. Choose a vitamin and mineral supplement that meets the requirements for the Recommend Daily Allowance, RDA. Do not take one every day, every other day is sufficient if you are trying to eat well balanced meals. Try to support your nutritional needs with quality foods as much as possible.

Water should be your preferred choice of refreshments as much as possible. Soft drinks contain refined white sugar, carbonation, colorings, flavorings, phosphoric acid, aluminum, etc. and have no place in your diet.

Sayings to live by:
You are what you eat. If you want to be fat eat lots of fat. Do you want to look like a donut eat donuts. If you want to look lean, eat healthy, live healthy, look healthy. Sayings to die by:
It doesn't matter what you eat, you have to die of something. My mom and dad are fat and so am I, I have bad genetics.

There is nothing more important in your whole life than eating right. Your immediate and long-term quality of life is a reflection of what you eat. Most people are more concerned about what type of gas or oil they put in their car than what they put in their mouth. Changing you thoughts and habits about what you eat is a commitment to a higher standard of living. Do not let other people's ignorance influence your choices when you have to select from a menu of less than healthy food.

Beware of items that are labeled "Low in Fat" they typically contain huge amounts of sugar and do not fit into the aforementioned scenario of not growing on a tree, bush, etc.

Always read labels for contents. The ingredients are listed in descending order of abundance, the first item on a label represents the majority ingredient of that product. The second item listed under ingredients represent the second most significant substance in that product, etc. If a product contains more than three items examine it closely. In order to confuse consumers manufacturers started listing vitamins by their more scientific name, B-1 as Riboflavin, so the consumer would not distinguish them from additives.

At first all of this is somewhat overwhelming and a lot of work. Lets look at what is at stake here, your life. Dietary habits are directly responsible for the majority of all colorectal cancers and cardiovascular disease (number one killer in the United States).

The majority of people would not be caught dead in a cheap rattle trap car or wear smelly clothes that has holes in them, or go out of the house without taking a shower. These same people try to save a penny when grocery shopping and buy inferior quality products that they are going to eat. They buy animal by products that the slaughter house can not sell any other way but to mix them up with food additives to make them taste good and market them as easy to use. Do not fear these items I am sure the Government has regulations on how much rat excrement they can contain. Better feed these to the kids I do not want to eat them. No mention of a scientific study demonstrating the correlation between Hot Dogs and cancer in children.

A few extra tips. Always eat some protein (chicken) when you eat pasta or whole wheat bread. Get back to nature and eat what mother nature made for you instead of eating what some desperate entrepreneur, trying to make a buck, has whipped up. My response to "but it tastes good." With today's food additives it is quite possible to make dog shit taste good, Would you eat it?
