No Nonsense Newsletter Vol. X, No. 3

During the holidays I did a lot of reminiscing. One day I wore one of my old sweat shirts that I found in the back of my closet. Somehow this shirt keeps escaping my routine Goodwill purge. The date on it reads 1994. A client/friend, Brian Cook took it off his back 12 years ago and gave it to me. Brian worked out in the gym that was named on the front of the sweatshirt: Sawyer Gym. The slogan reads, "The name will live on" This was the gym on the Miami University campus. Surely every gym member has memories that will live on. Same goes for those people that train at home! Speaking of old gyms … I’m in my brother in law (Tiger)’s office yesterday and he has a workout shirt from Roger’s old gym, Polaris, hanging over a glass frame on his wall to cut out the reflective glare from his window. Well, I guess there’s a reason we don’t give those old gym shirts away.

Here’s a memory for you!
Right before Christmas, Roger, myself and his younger brother Tiger had a conversation about old school, home rigging, weight training. The home gym they rigged compares to today’s home gyms like a Neanderthal to a perfectly groomed Wall Street Broker. Just imagine walking with 2- 25 lb plate weights in a cardboard box through a city and over a bridge, six miles give or take a few, just so you could get a weight that might do something to add a little bulk to your 15 year-old frame. Note: these did not have hand holes like the modern IVANKO plates of today, or even rims like Olympic plates. Roger said his forearms were sore for weeks. They rigged a pulley system to the beams in their basement and it was useful for quite awhile. But unbeknownst to them, the turnbuckle which connected the cable to the plates was slowly unscrewing – quarter turn by quarter turn. Roger still remembers the weight and set. He was trying for 15 reps with 140 lbs when the turnbuckle completely came undone and he pulled a 20-lb solid steel bar attached to 140 lbs in plates with a sliver of cable sticking through the cable clamp that attached it to the bar right down square in the middle of his head. Their parents were skeptical about any Bodybuilding magazines so they read in privacy and trained when no one was home. They invited guys over to train with them and over time, those same people brought their own different pieces of weight equipment, Roger and Tiger ended up with a variety of training options. All the partners quit over time, but Tiger and Roger just kept on training. What an easy way to stock your home gym! I just read an article on the Clean and Jerk in FLEX that reminded me of another story they told me. Tiger was learning the clean and jerk. He jerked the bar a little too far back and it started to pull him over backwards. But, because he knew his dad would kill him if he dropped it on the floor he held on and fell straight back with arms locked over his head onto the basement floor. They took him to the hospital. He cleared the exam with no concussion, and said they were thankful for the linoleum (which he was trying to protect) that "cushioned" his fall. (He must have had a hard head)

I think about the distance that Roger has traveled in his weight lifting world and I feel a loss for not having had the "old school" experience and spoiled for doing it the modern way! You should see his library collection of old Body Building magazines. He is on a quest to collect all of them from the very beginning of the sport. I guess that is why he knows all about the old days, the new training methods of today that are just the knock offs of yesterday!

The Riedinger family gossip isn’t too much different from everyone else. Roger and I are on a personal body changing quest! His shoulder is ready for an overhaul from many years of training. I am hoping that I wake up one morning and all of the Lean Out I have been taking will have melted all of the fat away from my body. I must be dreaming about this after I fall into deep sleep from the ZMA I take prior to bed. You know that you become what you think about most of the time! I am counting on it...

Daughter Jaye is in her second quarter at UC in the DAAP program. The Freshman 15 hasn’t come knocking at her door. Soon she will be able to design stuff for Beverly! Don’t tell her, but that is my little secret. She wants to work for Vogue! ... My favorite protein powder this month is Muscle Provider Chocolate. I used UMP for a couple of months and decided to switch to Muscle Provider for a while. I had almost forgotten how easy it mixes and how good it tastes. I like variety. One of my personal experiments is to place a jug of Ultra 40, and bottle of Lean Out on my work desk, and I take a couple every hour. This will help me take more throughout the day!

When I was 30, I instructed one or two aerobic classes each evening, weight trained in my wet drippy garage, walked at a 12-13 minute mile pace with a friend four mornings a week for 35-45 minutes, while Jaye was in morning preschool. How did I survive? Wow. Life sure does change over time. I now try to get cardio and training finished in less than 1 1/2 hours, 3- 5 days a week. The older I get, less time is invested in my training and more into my nutrition and supplements. Maybe I am just smarter now about choosing supplements for my needs. I will share a little secret with you. I still have my very first weight belt I used back when I was 21 and beginning to train. Roger bought it for me. Oh my goodness. It looks like a little kid’s belt. I held it up and thought, well I may never have that waistline again, but I can sure make drastic changes over a six month period, and so can you.

Beverly up close and personal...
Jeremiah tied the knot with Jennifer. Happy Times! Together they are opening a new gym, Body Armor in March 2006. The gym will be located in Wilder, Ky. (Very close to Beverly!!) … Mark Ritter’s new gym NNPT (No Nonsense Personal Training) located in the Eastgate area of Cincinnati, Ohio is now open and operating. He’s got some great hardcore equipment. Mark does personal training before and after his day at Beverly International. He’s also hitting it hard himself. Jeff Storch, helped a ton in getting the place ready to go. Jeff has now moved all his clients there …Rita just had knee surgery. She twisted her knee while running frantically through a forest (seriously) looking for her lost daughter. Luckily, Leah found her way out. Rita said she was so worried about Leah that she didn’t even know she’d hurt her knee. Fight or flight kicked in I guess … Lana is doing her very own Lana Diet with her husband Rodney. She is dreaming about food. Funny, she never talked about food before ... Danny resigned his warehouse position at Beverly to attend diesel mechanic’s school ... Steven and Rachel are still finishing their basement project! They purchased a power rack from New York Barbell, and Powerblocks to add to their home gym collection. I think this home remodel project has helped Lowe’s stock price to sky rocket...
Tim bought a condo and moved to KY! He formally commuted to work from Ohio. This is his first experience living on his own and he loves it! He is so much closer to work now. One night last month it snowed and took him three hours to get home to Ohio; now, his drive is less than 10 minutes! Sweet.

I suggest that if you are a personal trainer be sure to read Ian King’s new book The Way of The Physical Preparation Coach. His philosophies are very inspiring and helpful. You can get this book by emailing him at info@kingsports.net. FYI... Todd Swinney coauthored a book with Bruce Jenner, Steve Garvey and Phillip Fulmer "The Game Matters". He is now authoring a book with the working title My Way Nutrition, Supplementation and Training. (Premise…it will give you the answers on how to make your metabolism better through proper nutrition.) His son, Justin is now competing and looks fabulous. His favorite supplement is Synergy. He takes 16 synergy before workouts and he took 8-10 tabs prior to pumping up at his last show. Todd said that Justin goes through more Mass Maker and Ultra Size than any human being on the planet earth. (See Justin’s story in this issue)

We found a really great program with a training book, cd and personal journal at www.femine firmandfit.com This would be very helpful for any female working towards improving her nutrition plan and physique.

Food Labels are getting a face lift. The FDA says … Just eight major allergenic foods- milk, eggs, fish, crustaceans, wheat, tree nuts, soybeans and peanuts – account for 90% of all food allergies. About 2% of adults and 5% of young children suffer from them each year. Estimated total of 30,000 people visit the emergency room each year because of it. So… Beverly has updated and reviewed all of our product labels. Anything that could aggravate any allergy is listed. Just thought you would like to know this in case you are one of the 2%.

Charles Poliquin has a new Biosignature Modulation System for determining a correlation between hormone levels and fatty site accumulation. For example, he says that high readings in the suprailliac and subscapular areas as compared to the triceps may reflect poor insulin sensitivity and carb intolerance. High readings in the Quads and Hamstrings vs. the triceps may mean high estrogen levels. Some food for thought.

Let’s move on to bodybuilding world gossip!
Kurt Windisch had surgery last January and couldn’t work out for 6 weeks. When he returned to the gym he was nearly 25 pounds lighter and only able to squat and bench 95 lbs. Since his weight was so low already, he decided to do a show as a bantamweight. His secret weapon was Beverly’s BCAA’s Muscle Mass for hardening. He used 25 tabs during training and took 5 Muscle Mass tabs between meals. He also upped his Muscularity to 10 caps per meals 2 weeks out. He did no cardio because his bodyweight was so low. He also used a tanning product called Fake Bake that worked great. He placed 8th at the NPC Nationals and his conditioning was phenomenal.
Familiar names...David Candy and Scott Foster were also in the same class with Kurt. David Candy is some kind of strong man. He straight leg dead lifts 315 standing on 25 pound plates with perfect form. He only goes off of his strict diet once or twice a year and that is to indulge in a meal of unlimited sushi. What dedication!
Dave Candy
Dave is a full time Doctor of Physical Therapy student at Pitt. In addition to class work, he has 12 hours of clinicals per week, 3 part time jobs while still making time for training, dieting and socializing. Dave entered the stage with a fully rounded muscular development. He placed second in his first attempt at the NPC Nationals, while Scott Foster with his perfect genetics landed a little higher but in the top 10. Scott is a school teacher and sometimes gets in trouble for eating his beef and drinking his Beverly Shakes in front of the kids. Scott also had a bit of trouble making weight. He bet his Dad that if he made Bantam, his Dad would quit smoking. Dave won the bet, but his dad will have the greatest benefit if he is able to stop smoking. … Dale Pierce made top 10 in the lightweights and loves Glutamine Select, Muscularity, Mass and U-40. His favorite powder is MP.
