The purpose of this short article is to take you step-by-step along with me as I prepare for my first contest after a six-year lay-off. I wrote each segment as I went along - not after the whole process was completed.

16 Weeks Out

I had just helped my friend Paulette prepare for her first bodybuilding show, The Midwest States. Seeing her improve week-by-week started getting me fired up. Soon my competition flame was burning. Once her show was over it didn't take much for Paulette to talk me into competing again as well.

Here I am in the same relaxed pose - at left in the condition I was at 16 weeks out when starting with the Beverly International Team - at right March 4 at the Beverly International Headquarters

At 14 weeks out I started to clean up my diet and increased the intensity of my cardio. (I'm sort of a cardio freak and it's part of my daily routine - show or no show, diet or no diet. Same with my training - I always train intensely - so I left it the same.

I started seeing a few changes and noting some improvement; but I also remembered back to my last show and how hard it was to keep on track by myself. So I decided to call the team at Beverly International. I was 12 weeks out when I met them for my first assessment. Roger set me up on my first diet - 30% protein, 60% carbohydrate, 10% fat. This was basically how I eat anyway so the diet was easy for me to follow. But with one big difference - a supplement program designed specifically to enhance the results of my diet. Roger started me out with a Super Pak in the morning with my first meal, 4-Ultra 40 with each meal, and 4-Mass tablets per meal and a protein shake which contained Muscle Provider 2 scoops, with heavy whipping cream and, flaxseed oil, and 4 strawberries, It was delicious. My body stats at this time were bodyweight 154 at 10.6% bodyfat.

12 Weeks Out

Before going any farther, let me tell you a little about myself. I work and train at World Gym in Cincinnati. I work there eight hours a day or more besides working as a personal trainer when I'm not "on the clock". I've been doing this for the past six years, so, I do know a little about training, dieting, and supplements. But I think we all need a coach and supervision, and the Beverly team has been just that, not only with diet but all other aspects of contest prepararation. It's not a problem helping the average person to lose 20 pounds, (as long as they do as they are told). But dieting for a show is a lot more challenging. I recommend the team at Beverly International to anyone planning on competing. Please make sure you are serious. I've been there when people would come for appointments that had no idea what they wanted to accomplish and then would want to debate their diet program because it wasn't going to be easy. Beverly International does this for free. Don't waste their time.

Anyway, when I went back four weeks later, I had made some excellent improvements. My new body stats: bodyweight 156 at 9.95%. I only lost 1/2 lb. fat over this initial four-week period, but I gained 2.5 lbs. of muscle! It was time to make a few adjustments to my diet if I was ever going to get down to bantamweight.

My supplement program didn't change except we knocked out the Muscle Provider with heavy whipping cream, and added Ultra Size. Let me tell you right now … I thought Muscle Provider and heavy whipping cream was like cheating because it tasted so good, but Ultra Size is like having your cake and eating it to. It Rocks. It works too. You'll see why as you read on.

10 Weeks Out

Time to start posing, the Beverly Team helped me out there, too. They first took me through my mandatories. Then each pose was critiqued and changed if necessary to better enhance my physique. This has really helped, not only in my mandatories, but in my posing routine as well.

This time I went back to Beverly International and I had made some awesome changes in my physique. Here's the stats - bodyweight still 156 lbs. But my bodyfat dropped to 7.96%! I lost 3 lbs. of fat and gained 3 lbs. of muscle! Unreal! Here I was dieting for a show - gaining muscle and losing fat. Heck, I couldn't do that any other time during the past six years. And it wasn't because of my training because I really didn't change it. It had to be the supplements and the diet. It just goes to show … if you stick to your diet and use a quality supplement program you will make remarkable improvements. But only if you do it religiously. And only if you use the highest quality supplements available in a failsafe program designed by the Beverly international experts. I'm sorry, but you just can't read about a supplement in a magazine, buy it and wait for the results. It just doesn't work that way. Supplements need to be designed to work with your specific nutritional program.

Even though I was making gains that were unmatched over the last six years, I complained to Roger about waking up hungry at night and not being able to fall back asleep unless I drank a shake. Roger suggested sugar free Jell-o and to take some GH Factor, and Glutamine before going to bed, if I could afford to. So, I tried it and it worked great. Most people trying to just push their supplements would have said keep drinking the shake and add the GH Factor and L-Glutamine, but Roger said to only if I could afford it. This shows the people at Beverly International care more about your results than they do about their cash flow.

Eight Weeks Out

Ultra Size tastes great, but like everything else it can get boring day in and day out. So I started reading one of the flyers we had at the gym telling about the product. There was a recipe for Ultra Size pudding. This recipe contained cottage cheese, which was not on my diet. So, I thought I would try it mixed as pudding with just a small amount of water. I put 2 scoops of Ultra Size in a Tupperware bowl and started adding water from a water bottle a little at a time until I reached the consistency that suited me. It was awesome! I can't believe it! I'm a chef! (Later, Roger suggested adding cinnamon for another variation.) I call my recipe Ultra Goo.

I'm still getting great results on my body stats. This time: bodyweight - 151lbs. (I finally lost some weight) bodyfat dropped to 7.2%.

Six-Two Weeks Out

The next four weeks my diet remained the same. I just added some more cardio in the evening 3 times a week and posed every other day for half an hour and worked on my routine for 20 to 30 minutes.

When I went back Saturday, March 4th the team at Beverly was really happy with my progress. So was I. I went through my mandatory poses, checked my bodyfat which was down to 6% and I weighed in at 145 lbs. Believe me, I was happy with the weight drop as I intended to make bantamweight and needed to lose some weight. My diet would remain the same as the previous weeks until the final week with one B-I-G exception. I had told Roger that I felt like I was about to lose control and pig out sometime soon. You're not going to believe what's coming next… He then said the magic words, "Rob, since you're already in contest condition go out tonight and eat whatever you want and top it off with the biggest cookie shake you can find." I can't go into detail on what all I had to eat that night because I would run out of ink. But, it was the break I needed and it actually helped my progress by speeding up my metabolism for the final two weeks.

Although my training itself changed very little, at 2 weeks out Roger had me do something that I had read about a few months ago. I was kind of skeptical about how it would work during my training. But everything else he suggested had worked so I decided to give it a try. What you do is get about 30 branch chain amino acid tablets, (Muscle Mass), take 5 about 15 minutes before you start training, then throughout your workout take 3-5 every 7-10 minutes. I got some of the most incredible pumps in my entire training experience when doing this. It would have impressed even the biggest Creatine user.

On Saturday March 11th I called Beverly International and asked if I could come in for one final time. I wasn't scheduled for an appointment, but the team at Beverly had said that I could make a trip over or call anytime if I needed last minute assurance or adjustments. (I thought this gesture was very considerate. Not only are they helping many other people, they were also just one week away from promoting one of the largest contests in our area, The Northern Kentucky BB Championship, which often has a hundred or more competitors in it.) The strange thing is - they work with all those athletes and nearly every one of them looks great. Roger and Sandy never cease to amaze me. I guess they don't sleep. Anyway, back to my morning. I called and Roger said no problem. I knew this would be the toughest part of the whole process for me. I think it takes a lot of experience to help someone the final week. I thought that I might have to move in with Sandy and Roger. But they said I would have to share a bed with 11 other competitors. So I said, "Never mind." I'll just call if I have any questions.

I competed at the NKY2000 in my best condition ever - after a six-year break from competition

I explained to Roger how I was losing 5-6 lbs. over night, and then gaining it back during the day. He assured me that it was normal for that to happen. I also told him that my meals were 3-31/2 hours apart and I would frequently get really light headed and tired like a diabetic needing insulin. He suggested taking Ultra 40 liver tablets whenever that happened and to eat a little sugar free Jell-o. Once again, it did the trick. I couldn't stump him if I tried. He knows all the tricks. Now, do you see why I wanted to move in with them the final week?

My bodyfat was now down to 5.8% but more important my skin fold total was 31.1 mm, which was the lowest it has ever been. My lower body was separated like never before. My abs looked better than ever, and I was very happy with my upper body.

Final Week

That Saturday when I left Beverly International Headquarters, I was very confident. I was ready and in one week I'd be on stage. The week passed and I got better and better. I weighed in right at the limit and had the time of my life at the 2000 Northern Kentucky. There was a packed house and they stayed until the end. People were standing on their chairs and yelling. I stepped on stage with eight other bantamweights - a lot tougher competition than you normally find in the bantams - and walked away with the 3rd place trophy. Not bad for my first show back after a six-year hiatus.

Supplements:
My supplement strategy was a Super Pak each morning; 4-Ultra 40 and 4-Mass with each meal; and of course Ultra Size. I drank Ultra Size, ate it as a pudding and would have made candy out of it if I'd had enough time to figure out how. Ultra Size Rocks!
