The next show came quickly and having been through the process once before made the eight weeks of cutting a little easier to tolerate. I was really honing in on my posing. By the time the Natural Northern USA arrived I was hitting my mandatory poses twice every day for 60 seconds each. I'd made significant progress as a bodybuilder and accomplished all three of my short-term goals (bigger, better conditioned, much better poser). My conditioning really paid off! Even in the open juniors class which featured sixteen competitors (some outweighing me by more than fifty pounds I finished 4th. The three guys who placed ahead of me (Jim Collins, Tim Mielke, and Sean Young) are all three Beverly clients, and interestingly also old high school buddies of mine. The difference in our conditioning, muscle quality, and overall appearance was obvious. It was plain to see Beverly set us apart from the rest of the field. The following week I competed in the Kentucky Muscle as a novice lightweight. To my surprise and nervousness, both Roger and Sandy were judges at the show. At the time I only knew the two as vague acquaintances. My unnecessary excitement made me feel kind of like Dorothy going in front of the Wizard of OZ. Now as I look back, I have to laugh because I have become friends with the two and now know they are some of the most friendly, down to earth people that you will come across. Despite giving up nearly twenty pounds, I came in a close second in the novice lightweight class. Being the competitive and goal oriented person that I am, I was satisfied with my placing, but yearned to do better. I knew that if I wanted to improve I needed some honest criticism. The first two judges I went to for their critique were Roger and Sandy.
The difference in conditioning, muscle quality, and overall appearance of Beverly athletes is obvious. I was very pleased to hear that based on my conditioning and symmetry, they both had me 1st in my class. However, they laid it out to me plain and simple in regards to what needed to be improved: I needed to add more quality lean muscle everywhere. They felt my conditioning and symmetry were great, but I still had a lot of room to fill out and remain a bantamweight. They also made sure to remind me that the quality of muscle was more important than just the mass and to make quality lean mass gains as drug free bodybuilder would take time and perseverance. From that point forward, those suggestions became more like a mission. The next few months I came back harder than ever in the weight room. I focused every day in the gym, kept my supplement intake high, and began researching and writing meal plans for myself. The months flew by; I soon graduated from OSU and moved back to Cincinnati. It was nice to be home with friends and family again, and being in closer contact with Beverly International headquarters didn't hurt either. Shortly after coming back, I tried the 7/70 training and diet program, which was in Beverly's BodyMuscle magazine. (You can find it on the web at www.bodymusclejournal.com) I also started using Beverly's Muscle Synergy. I decided to give both the 7 / 70 training system and Muscle Synergy a try hoping that this combination would help me make more gains. BOY DID THEY, AND THEN SOME!!! I felt the difference almost immediately. Suddenly my strength and endurance skyrocketed. I was shattering previous weight room highs (squat went from a one rep max of 405 to 455... not for 1, but 4!!!), and making noticeable gains in size as well. It was incredible, with the assistance of a clean meal plan, Muscle Synergy and the 7/70 program, I was bigger, leaner, and stronger than ever! I set my sights on competing once again.
